Our research involves the development and integration of computer-based simulation and visualization with innovative technologies to provide novel solutions for real-world problems and to demonstrate their capabilities through computer-based prototype systems.

The technologies being pursued draw on the Group’s expertise in computer graphics, visualization, mathematical modelling, computer-based simulation, digital cartography, terrain/seabed visualization, virtual environments, position sensing, haptic devices, imaging and their skills and industrial experience in the engineering of large complex computer-based systems.

The real-world problems being addressed by the Group have been carefully selected to match research priorities and initiatives of the UK and EC. Thus, the objectives for the Group include investigating:

  • Simulation techniques of complex environments in support of virtual and augmented reality,
  • Support for a wide range of problem-solving activities by effecting a cohesion of numerical simulation, visualization and data management
  • Innovative data models and visualization techniques for geospatial data
  • Imaging technologies with a particular emphasis on registration, reconstruction, fusion and position localisation within medical images.

SimVis is split into four research groups: Medical, Modelling, Heritage and Games.

The 'Valley of the First Ironmasters' site was launched on 13 December 2004 by archaeologist Julian Richards of 'Meet the Ancestors' fame. Hull Museums hosted a press launch in the morning and, later in the day, the University of Hull hosted a launch for ERAS and University members. The site was co-ordinated by Peter Halkon, Martin Millett and Ian Dolphin. Visit the site here.
