Background

A first class honours graduate in Computer Science from Manchester University (1970). A research career spanning some 35 years in computer science. Spent first 20 years of career developing operating system and compiler technology. Since 1992 involved in developing innovative computer based solutions for medicine that exploit developments in imaging science, simulation and modeling. Since 1990 supervised over 30 postgraduate research students at University of Hull. My research collaborators include numerous international companies, numerous hospitals in the region and various UK Universities. In 1995 I won the coveted BCS UK IT Award as team leader for the Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery project.

Current Responsibilities

  • Director of Hull Immersive Visualization Environment
  • Director of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Applied Science & Technology
  • Director of Graduate Studies, Computer Science
  • Co-Editor of Medicine Meets Virtual Reality Conference Proceedings

Research Interests

Imaging Science – My research involves solving real world problems in medicine by developing new, and integrating existing, Imaging Science techniques. Imaging Science covers such topics as image scene acquisition, image scene manipulation and visualization and simulation of image scenes. Topics of particular interest are

  • image scene acquisition: image calibration, position sensing, fluoroscopic imaging, medical imaging technologies, ...
  • image scene manipulation: image registration (rigid and non rigid), image matching, image fusion, image analysis, segmentation, ...
  • visualization and simulation of image scenes: virtual environments, haptics rendering, synthetic image generation, ...

Novel Computer-based Systems for Medicine - I am currently researching novel computer-based solutions in the following medical areas:

  • orthopaedics and bone: image guided systems for orthopaedic trauma surgery, surgical planning, simulation of bone remodelling and bone diseases, prediction of fracture risk, ...
  • radiotherapy treatment of cancer: conformal radiotherapy treatments, adaptive radiotherapy, cancer awareness, linear accelerator simulators for training ...
  • cardiology: quantitative analysis of left ventricle from MRI, simulation and visualization of cardiac function, modeling of heart diseases, ...
  • interventional radiology: virtual environment simulators for needle puncture, haptic models, ...
