The start of this discussion thread

Aug 02 :

Mahes Visvalingam invited Ramesh Raskar and Michael Cohen to check the CISRG evaluation of their polygon fattening approach to image precision silhouette rendering.
Main concern: polygon fattening did not seem to provide a clear depiction of the silhouettes of terrain.

20 Aug 02 :  Ramesh's response

Provided pointers to new book:

Query:  What is the difference between silhouette and occluding contour
as far as the displaying them for 3D polygonal scenes is concerned ?

21 Aug 02 : mv queries Figure 7.4 in book excerpt,  http://www.acm.org/tog/resources/RTR/rtr2_npr.pdf

21 Aug 02:  Ramesh's response

Yes .. that is the defn of silhouette for polygonal models

22 Aug 02 :

mv notes that researchers in different fields are using silhouette and related terms differently and we agree that it would be helpful to start a discussion thread on this topic.  mv to write the foreword and invite researchers in NPAR,  cartography, psychology and vision research to contribute towards greater awareness.
