| Many thanks to Keith Gate of
Contour Designs for providing his A2-size Walkers Maps for display at the
exhibition. These beautifully crafted hand-drawn maps demonstrate the application of
the various cartographic techniques mentioned above (simplification, map projection,
typification and symbolisation, amongst others) in conjunction with colour and
elements of realism. The scanned map extract on the left does not have the
resolution or colour of the original.
Another
excellent resource is the web record of a paper, on Heinrich Berann's landcape panaromas,
by Tom Patterson of the U.S. National Park
Service. The paper discusses Berann's intuitive application of cartographic
principles and techniques.
